If you have a limited ad budget, you probably can't run every channel at once. The two platforms most Indian businesses consider first are Google Ads and Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram). They work in very different ways, and choosing the wrong one first is one of the most common reasons small businesses decide "online ads don't work".
The core difference: demand capture vs demand creation
Google Ads captures existing demand. Someone types "AC repair in Pitampura" or "CA for GST filing Delhi". They already know what they want, and your ad appears at that exact moment.
Meta Ads creates demand. People scrolling Instagram or Facebook aren't searching for anything. Your ad interrupts them with something interesting: a new product, an offer, a before-and-after video. You're reaching people based on who they are and what they like, not what they're searching for.
Side-by-side comparison
| Google Ads | Meta Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Customer intent | High: actively searching | Lower: browsing |
| Cost per click | Usually higher, especially in competitive categories | Usually lower |
| Creative needed | Text ads, a few images | Strong images and short videos (Reels) |
| Targeting | Keywords, location, device, schedule | Age, interests, behaviour, lookalike audiences |
| Best for | Services, urgent needs, B2B, high-ticket enquiries | Fashion, beauty, food, D2C products, events, awareness |
| Speed of results | Fast, if search volume exists | Fast to reach people; conversions need testing |
When to start with Google Ads
- People already search for your service. Check Google Keyword Planner for terms like "[your service] in Delhi" or "[your service] near me".
- The need is urgent: plumbers, pest control, hospitals, legal help, car repair.
- You sell high-value services or B2B solutions where a single lead is worth a lot, such as interior design, coaching institutes, software or industrial supplies.
- You don't yet have strong photo or video content.
Tip: start with tightly matched keywords, add negative keywords such as "free", "jobs", "course" and "salary" from day one, and send traffic to a focused landing page rather than your homepage.
When to start with Meta Ads
- Your product is visual and people buy on impulse: clothing, jewellery, home décor, skincare, food.
- Your category is new and people don't know to search for it yet.
- You want to build a following and retarget visitors and video viewers later.
- You're running an event, launch or limited-time offer in a specific area, such as a new outlet opening in Dwarka.
Tip: on Meta, the creative is the targeting. Test three to five different short videos or images with clear hooks in the first two seconds, then put more budget behind the winners. Click-to-WhatsApp ads work especially well in India because customers prefer chatting to filling in forms.
The best answer for most businesses: both, in the right order
As your budget grows, the two platforms support each other:
- Google Search brings in ready-to-buy customers.
- Meta builds awareness and fills the top of your funnel.
- Retargeting on both brings back visitors who didn't enquire the first time.
Many businesses find that Meta campaigns increase branded searches on Google, so judging each channel only on its own "last click" can undervalue Meta.
Set up tracking before you spend a rupee
Whichever platform you choose, results depend on measurement. Before launching:
- Install Google Analytics 4 and the Meta Pixel, and set up the Conversions API.
- Track form submissions, phone calls and WhatsApp clicks as conversions.
- Record lead quality in a simple sheet or CRM. A cheap lead that never converts is not a good lead.
How much budget do you need?
There's no fixed minimum, but you need enough to collect useful data. A practical rule is to plan for at least 30 days and enough budget to get a few dozen clicks a day on Google, or to test several creatives on Meta. Spending too little across too many campaigns is a common reason tests fail. It's better to run one well-built campaign properly than five small ones.
Frequently asked questions
Which is cheaper in India, Google Ads or Facebook Ads?
Clicks on Meta are usually cheaper than on Google Search. But Google traffic often converts better because people are actively searching. The fairer comparison is cost per qualified lead or sale, not cost per click.
Can I run ads for only one area of Delhi?
Yes. Both platforms let you target a radius around an address or specific pin codes and localities, which is useful for shops, clinics and restaurants that serve nearby customers.
Do Instagram ads and Facebook ads need separate accounts?
No. Both are managed from Meta Ads Manager, and you can choose to show ads on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger from the same campaign.
